I'll admit I'm a bit of an iPhone addict. I'd be lost without my devices. However, on my recent trip to Fiji, a stay at an out of the way destination on the Coral Coast where access to WiFi was limited, gave me the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the web and enjoy the beautiful tropical oasis.

6 days later, I was back online and while I hadn't thought about it nor missed it, it was like I'd never left. I had things to do - Facebook items to post, credit card bills to pay before their due date, emails to send and messages to check.

For those of you who also like the convenience of a mobile device, here are a few great Apps that will help you get sorted and stay on top of your money.

Spending Tracker

"Budget" is almost a dirty word, especially if you're the government! Instead, we like to help our clients understand how to spend less than they earn (and save before they spend).

It's easiest when you keep it simple and MoneySmart's TrackMySPEND is a great tool to track your personal expenses on the go. It gives you a clear picture of what you're spending your money on. The App allows you to:

  • Set realistic spending limits and stick to it
  • Track your spending by categories
  • Separate 'needs' and 'wants' and identify opportunities to save

All the major banks (and most likely all of the minor ones too!) have mobile banking Apps. But each of them also have a range of tools to help you with your finances.

For example:

NAB give you an exchange rate calculator making it easy to check rates for holiday travels as well as simple saving and loan calculators.

CommBank offer a savings tracker to help you visualise your money and work out how much you can save.

ANZ provide a digital magazine with regular articles to help you become more confident with your money and practical tips to help build your knowledge.

If the "what ifs" in life come to pass, they can derail you and leave you vulnerable both physically and financially. TAL gives you a reality check by showing you the likelihood of claim for different scenarios with their Reality Checker.

Financial Calculators

For simple financial calculators that give you a basic indication of what could be, MoneySmart's Financial Calculator provides easy to use tools for savings, loans, mortgage, superannuation and interest-free deals.

Money Health Check

Do you have your financial house all in order? Do you know what you've got, where it is and if you'll be ok if things go awry? MoneySmart's Health Check helps you know if you're on the right track and in control of your money.
